Do not shampoo your hair for 48 hours. This allows enough time for the bonds to settle. Keep it dry - no saunas, working out, showers, etc.
You may experience a tension headache during the first few days after application. This is common and will go away with time and wear.
Sleeping with Extensions
Before going to bed, it is important to ensure that your hair is completely dry, especially at the root.
Pull back your hair into a loose ponytail or braid at the nape of your neck to prevent the hair from getting matted and tangled.
Do not sleep with a high ponytail or high bun as this can cause tension at the root and discomfort.
Silk pillowcase is recommended, as it reduces friction on your hair which prevents matting and tangling during the night.
Brushing Extensions
Always brush your hair and the extensions with an extension friendly brush such as a detangling brush (Tangle Teezer) row by row, brushing from the ends to roots while holding your hair in a ponytail and gently working your way up, and brush above the extension attachment at the roots.
Brush your hair 3 times a day . Ideally, before you shower, and before going to sleep.
Never brush wet extensions as as they are most fragile when wet, and can pull on your natural hair.
Washing Extensions
To ensure your extensions will remain in good quality, do not use a volumizing line or any products that contains sulfate, sulfonate, C11-15 or parabens. It is also preferable for alcohol to not be high on the list of ingredients and that it is not silicone based. These ingredients break down the bond and/or dry out the extensions which will cause irreversible damage resulting in matting/tangling.
Wash your hair at least once or twice a week in one direction and in an upright position, never upside down. When dirt accumulates, including sweat, hair is prone to tangles. It is safe to wash your hair as often as needed, as long as you are following the aftercare and using the right products.
Do not apply conditioner to the scalp, but rather to the ends from the shoulders down. Too much conditioner or very oily hair can weaken the bonds and your extensions will be prone to slipping.
Shampooing twice can ensure all residue, dirt and oils are removed from the scalp and point of attachment. The built residue can result in discomfort and irritation.
If needed, a dry shampoo can be used on the top of your head (on the natural hair) in between washings.
Every 1-2 weeks, perform a deep conditioning treatment on your extensions, again from the shoulders down. This extra TLC will give your hair a moisturizing boost.
Swimming with Extensions
When swimming in chlorinated water, avoid getting your hair wet and/or always wear a cap to prevent the hair from touching the chlorine as this can damage the hair extension and they can become dry. If this is unavoidable, be sure to wash and deep condition your hair immediately after to moisturize.
If using a hot tub or sauna, ensure hair is tied up and avoid submerging your hair in the water as this can break down the bonds and cause hair to become dry and frizzy.
Consistent exposure to chlorine, non-mineral based sunscreen, tanning lotion, saltwater, and sulfur from hot weather could break down the integrity of the bonds and lead to premature slipping of the extensions as well as matting and tangling. Just as our natural hair can change colour, this can also cause the extensions to change colour.
General Care
When using heat to style your hair, be sure to stay away from the bonds. Always use a heat protectant spray as well to minimize damage even if only using a hair dryer.
It is completely normal to lose a few bonds as your wear the extensions; however, if you are losing more than 5 strands, please contact Asha to identify the cause.
In-studio Maintenance
To avoid matting at the root and damage to your natural hair, ensure scheduled re-installation appointments are required every 6-8 weeks for beaded, tape-in and sewn-in weft methods. For keratin-tip, no longer than 3 months.
Avoid tinting, colouring or perming as well as any other way of processing hair extensions. If you do so, it is at your own risk.
Ensure removals are done safely by a trained professional and never remove them yourself as this can cause damage to your natural hair.
